Where your dish points in Southend-on-Sea

From Southend-on-Sea, the Astra satellites at 28.2° east sit to the south-east. These are the angles we set with a meter on every dish here.

Tilt up

A few degrees out and the picture drops in heavy rain. We align every dish with a meter, then lock it off.

In Southend-on-Sea that means facing 146° SSE, tilted 25.7° up, with the LNB turned about 20°. Trees, chimneys and neighbouring extensions in that direction are the usual reasons a dish can't see the satellite, so we check the line of sight before we fit anything.

Satellite engineers in Southend

We install, move and repair satellite dishes in Southend-on-Sea for Sky and Freesat customers across the city, from Leigh-on-Sea, Chalkwell and Westcliff to Prittlewell, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness. We also repair and extend shared satellite systems in blocks of flats along the seafront and in the city centre.

From Southend, the Sky and Freesat satellites at 28.2° east lie roughly to the south-east, out over the estuary. Many homes have a clear view in that direction, which is good news. The challenge here isn't usually signal strength; it's keeping the dish still and protecting it from the weather.

Built for seafront weather

Wind off the Thames estuary and the North Sea is the main enemy of satellite dishes in Southend. A dish only needs to move a fraction of a degree to lose the satellite in heavy rain, and salt air corrodes LNBs, brackets and connectors far faster than inland. We fit dishes on rigid brackets with stainless fixings, use weather-sealed connectors and double-screened cable, and check the alignment holds before we leave. Where an old dish has corroded, we replace the LNB and fittings rather than patching it up.

Flats and converted houses

Southend has thousands of flats, many in converted Victorian and Edwardian houses in Westcliff and Leigh, and many in purpose-built blocks on the seafront and in the centre. Leases often restrict private dishes. Some buildings already have a shared dish feeding every flat; others don't. We check what's in place, connect your flat to an existing system where possible and repair or upgrade shared systems for landlords and managing agents.

Leigh Old Town and conservation areas

Parts of Southend, including Leigh Old Town and some streets in Leigh, Westcliff and Prittlewell, are conservation areas. There, a dish usually can't be fixed to a chimney, wall or roof slope that faces onto and is visible from a road. We find a compliant position at the side or rear, or on a lower roof, with a clear view to the south-east.

Dish moves and multi-room

Loft conversions, dormer extensions and solar panels are popular in Southend's terraces and semis, and they often mean the dish has to move. We take it down, refit it in the best new spot and realign it. We also add feeds for Sky or Freesat boxes in bedrooms, kitchens and garden rooms.

Satellite problems we fix in Southend-on-Sea

  • Rusty dish and bracket

    Likely cause
Salt air corroding cheap steel fittings and the LNB.
    How we fix it
Stainless fixings, a sealed LNB and weatherproof connectors.
  • Flat's satellite socket is dead

    Likely cause
A failed multiswitch or riser cable in the block's shared system.
    How we fix it
We test the flat and the shared equipment and fix whichever has failed.
  • 'No satellite signal' after a storm

    Likely cause
Wind or scaffolders have moved the dish, or a loose bracket has let it droop.
    How we fix it
Re-secure on a rigid bracket and realign to the right bearing and elevation.
  • Worked in winter, fails in summer

    Likely cause
Trees coming into leaf between the dish and the satellite.
    How we fix it
Move the dish to a position with a clear view all year.
  • Picture drops out in heavy rain

    Likely cause
A dish a fraction of a degree out of line, or an ageing LNB with no signal margin left.
    How we fix it
Realign with a satellite meter and replace the LNB if it's failing.
  • Want satellite in an annexe or barn

    Likely cause
The main dish is too far away or has no spare output.
    How we fix it
Run cable from the dish or fit a second small dish.

Freesat as an alternative

If you'd rather not pay a monthly subscription, Freesat gives you over 100 channels through a dish. It's also useful if your aerial struggles to choose between Sudbury and Crystal Palace, because satellite reception doesn't depend on either.

We can also remove old, unused dishes from walls and chimneys and take away the cable, a common request on Southend's converted houses.

Why does my dish near the seafront keep losing signal?

Wind off the estuary can shift a dish just enough to lose the satellite, and salt corrodes the LNB and connectors. We realign with a meter, fit rigid brackets and stainless fixings, and replace corroded parts.

Can I fit a dish on my Westcliff flat?

It depends on your lease and the building. Many converted houses and blocks restrict private dishes, and some have a shared system. We'll check and advise on the best option.

Do you work in Leigh-on-Sea conservation areas?

Yes. Parts of Leigh, including the Old Town, are conservation areas. We find dish positions that don't face and can't be seen from the road.
