Aerial engineers for Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth sits on a strip of land between the North Sea and the River Yare, which makes it one of the most exposed towns we work in. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Great Yarmouth across the town and its neighbours: terraces in Northgate and around the Market Place, the historic Rows and Hall Quay, guesthouses and flats behind the Golden Mile, family homes in Gorleston and Bradwell, the streets of Southtown and Cobholm, and the holiday parks along the coast at Caister and Hemsby.

Every visit starts with a signal meter. Testing first means we can tell whether you need a new aerial or whether new cable, sealed connectors or a realignment will do.

Tacolneston and the Gorleston relay

Great Yarmouth receives Freeview from the Tacolneston transmitter, south-west of Norwich, which carries BBC East and ITV Anglia. Tacolneston reaches most of the town, but the distance and the low-lying land mean some streets get a weaker signal. To fill those gaps, there's a Gorleston-on-Sea relay, which serves parts of Gorleston, Southtown and the surrounding area.

The relay uses vertical polarisation, so aerials pointed at it are mounted on their side. You'll see both types on Yarmouth's rooftops. We measure Tacolneston and the relay at your property, then fit and align the aerial for the most reliable result.

Your Freeview channels in Great Yarmouth

Which signal your aerial uses decides how many Freeview channels you get in Great Yarmouth. Tacolneston is a main transmitter and carries the full line-up, HD included. The Gorleston-on-Sea relay carries a cut-down version: the main BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels, but far fewer of the rest. If your channel list looks short, the aerial may be on the relay, and we can tell you whether Tacolneston is strong enough at your address to get the rest.

Whatever the job, we finish by retuning every TV and recorder in the house and checking that each Freeview channel, including HD, comes in cleanly. Freeview Play catch-up also needs the TV online, so we check that while we are there. Weighing up Freeview against Freesat or Sky? See our guide to Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Freely.

Wind, salt and low-lying land

Yarmouth's aerials face wind from the sea on one side and across the open marshes of the Halvergate levels on the other. Salt carried on the wind corrodes clamps and connectors, water gets into the cable and travels down it, and winter storms loosen brackets and bend poles. On every job here we use stainless and heavy-duty fixings, double-screened cable and sealed connectors, and make sure the aerial is secure before we leave.

Guesthouses, hotels and holiday parks

Great Yarmouth is one of the country's best-known seaside resorts, with guesthouses, hotels and holiday parks that need TV in every room or unit. We design and repair distribution systems that feed many TVs from one aerial, with amplifiers sized for the building so every room gets a strong signal. When some rooms lose channels and others don't, we trace the fault through the system.

Flats and converted houses

Many larger houses near the seafront and in the town centre are now flats with a shared aerial. When several flats lose signal at the same time, the fault is usually in the communal equipment. We repair and upgrade communal systems for residents and landlords.

Gorleston and Bradwell

South of the river, Gorleston's Edwardian streets and Bradwell's newer estates make up a large residential area. Typical jobs are aerials loosened by wind, water damage in old cable, aerials that need a filter for 4G and 5G interference, and extra TV points in bedrooms and extensions.

Common aerial jobs in Great Yarmouth

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • Aerial rusted or bent

    Likely cause
Salt air and coastal gales attacking cheap steel fittings.
    How we fix it
Stainless and heavy-duty fixings on a stronger pole.

Speak to an engineer

Why have I lost Freeview channels in Great Yarmouth?

Usually because the aerial is no longer picking up every Freeview multiplex from the Gorleston-on-Sea relay or the Tacolneston mast south-west of Norwich. Frequencies have been reorganised over the years, so an older aerial, a waterlogged cable or a failing amplifier can lose some channels while others look fine. We test the signal at the aerial and at every socket in your Great Yarmouth home, then tell you whether a retune, new cable, a realign or a new Freeview aerial will fix it.

Should my aerial in Great Yarmouth point at Tacolneston or the Gorleston relay?

Both serve the area with BBC East and ITV Anglia. Many homes receive Tacolneston well, while others, particularly in Gorleston and Southtown, get a cleaner signal from the Gorleston-on-Sea relay, which needs a vertically mounted aerial. We measure both before choosing.

My aerial keeps getting blown out of line. Can you fix it for good?

Usually. We re-secure or replace the bracket, use heavy-duty and stainless fixings, and fit the aerial so it can't twist in the wind.

Do you repair aerials in holiday parks and guesthouses?

Yes. We repair and upgrade shared aerial systems in holiday parks, guesthouses, hotels and blocks of flats.
