Aerial engineers for Lowestoft

Lowestoft is the most easterly town in the UK, and its position on the North Sea coast makes TV reception here a job for engineers who understand coastal weather. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Lowestoft across the whole town: the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Kirkley and the South Beach, the old High Street and the Scores, family homes in Pakefield, Gunton and Normanston, the newer estates at Carlton Colville and Woods Meadow, and the waterside homes around Oulton Broad.

We always test first. A signal meter at the aerial and at each TV point tells us whether the problem is the aerial, the cable, the connectors, an amplifier or interference, so you pay for the fix you actually need.

Your Freeview channels in Lowestoft

Which signal your aerial uses decides how many Freeview channels you get in Lowestoft. Tacolneston is a main transmitter and carries the full line-up, HD included. The Lowestoft relay carries a cut-down version: the main BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels, but far fewer of the rest. If your channel list looks short, the aerial may be on the relay, and we can tell you whether Tacolneston is strong enough at your address to get the rest.

Before we leave, every TV and recorder is retuned to Freeview and checked channel by channel, HD included. For Freeview Play, the TV also needs a broadband connection, and we set that up if it is missing. Weighing up Freeview against Freesat or Sky? See our guide to Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Freely.

Tacolneston and the Lowestoft relay

Although Lowestoft is in Suffolk, it gets its Freeview from the Norfolk side. The main transmitter is Tacolneston, a tall mast south-west of Norwich, which carries BBC East and ITV Anglia. Tacolneston gives many Lowestoft homes a strong signal, but distance, buildings and the lie of the land mean some streets do better with the local Lowestoft relay.

The relay broadcasts with vertical polarisation, while Tacolneston uses horizontal, so the aerials look different on the roof. If yours is turned on its side, it's probably pointed at the relay. We measure both signals at your property and choose the one that gives the most stable picture, rather than copying the house next door.

Built for North Sea weather

Coastal aerials have a hard life. Salt spray drifts well inland from the beach, corroding clamps, brackets and the connector at the top of the cable. Water gets into the cable and travels down it, slowly killing the signal. And the winter gales that come in off the North Sea loosen chimney brackets, bend poles and twist aerials out of line. That's why we use stainless and heavy-duty fixings, double-screened cable and sealed connectors on every coastal job, and check the installation is solid before we leave.

Oulton Broad and the waterside

Homes around Oulton Broad and Lake Lothing sit lower than much of the town, and trees and boatyard buildings can shadow the signal. Higher-gain aerials on a taller pole, or switching between Tacolneston and the relay, often makes the difference. Riverside properties also tend to suffer more from damp in old cabling.

Flats, holiday homes and communal systems

Lowestoft has many flats, from converted guesthouses along the seafront to purpose-built blocks, and there are holiday parks and caravan sites along the coast towards Kessingland, Corton and Hopton. Many of these share a communal aerial. When several homes lose channels at once, the fault is usually in the shared amplifier, splitters or main aerial, which we trace and repair.

New homes at Carlton Colville and Woods Meadow

On the newer estates to the south and north of town, aerials are usually modern, but homes often have too few TV points. We add points to bedrooms and extensions, fit distribution amplifiers and set up Freeview Play on new smart TVs.

Common aerial jobs in Lowestoft

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • Aerial rusted or bent

    Likely cause
Salt air and coastal gales attacking cheap steel fittings.
    How we fix it
Stainless and heavy-duty fixings on a stronger pole.

Why have I lost Freeview channels in Lowestoft?

Usually because the aerial is no longer picking up every Freeview multiplex from the Lowestoft relay or the Tacolneston mast south-west of Norwich. Frequencies have been reorganised over the years, so an older aerial, a waterlogged cable or a failing amplifier can lose some channels while others look fine. We test the signal at the aerial and at every socket in your Lowestoft home, then tell you whether a retune, new cable, a realign or a new Freeview aerial will fix it.

Which transmitter should my Lowestoft aerial point at?

Lowestoft is in the Tacolneston area, carrying BBC East and ITV Anglia. Many homes get a good signal from Tacolneston itself, west of Norwich, while others are better served by the Lowestoft relay, which needs a vertically mounted aerial. We measure both before choosing.

Why do aerials near the seafront fail so often?

Salt air corrodes clamps, brackets and connectors, and gales off the North Sea loosen fixings and bend poles. We use stainless and heavy-duty fittings, sealed connectors and double-screened cable.

Can you repair the communal aerial in my block?

Yes. We repair and upgrade communal aerial systems in blocks of flats and holiday parks around Lowestoft.
