Aerial engineers across Peterborough

Peterborough grew quickly after it became a new town in the late 1960s. Around the cathedral and the old centre are Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Millfield, New England and Fletton, and beyond them the townships of Bretton, Orton and Werrington, followed more recently by Hampton, Paston and Cardea. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Peterborough across all of them, from single houses to large blocks of flats.

Sandy Heath, and sometimes Belmont

Peterborough sits at the northern edge of the Anglia TV region. Most homes receive Freeview from the Sandy Heath transmitter about 30 miles to the south, carrying BBC East and ITV Anglia. Some homes on the north side of the city can also receive Belmont in Lincolnshire, which carries BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. If neighbouring aerials on your street point in different directions, that's usually why.

We measure both signals at your roof, explain which regional news each one brings, and set up the aerial for the one that's strongest and most stable at your address.

Your Freeview channels in Peterborough

Sandy Heath is a main transmitter, so homes in Peterborough should see every Freeview channel, HD included. Gaps in the channel list usually point to the aerial, the cable or an amplifier rather than the transmitter, and a signal meter shows which.

Before we leave, every TV and recorder is retuned to Freeview and checked channel by channel, HD included. For Freeview Play, the TV also needs a broadband connection, and we set that up if it is missing. Weighing up Freeview against Freesat or Sky? See our guide to Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Freely.

The townships

Bretton, Orton and Werrington were built with a lot of shared housing and many original aerials are now forty years old or more. Corroded elements, water in the cable and tired amplifiers are the usual faults. On the newer estates at Hampton and Paston, the aerial is modern but homes often have only one or two TV points, so we add more and fit a distribution amplifier.

Flats and communal systems

The city has a large number of flats, from converted buildings near the river to new blocks around the station. Most share a communal aerial. We trace faults through the shared system and repair or upgrade it for the whole building.

Common aerial problems in Peterborough

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • Regional news from the wrong area

    Likely cause
The aerial is pointed at Belmont rather than Sandy Heath, or the other way round.
    How we fix it
We test both and realign to the region you want, if the signal allows.

Do I need a new aerial for Freeview in Peterborough?

Not always. Freeview in Peterborough comes from the Sandy Heath mast in Bedfordshire, broadcast with horizontal polarisation. If your aerial points the right way, is in good condition and covers the frequencies in use today, a retune or new cable may be all it needs. Some homes in Peterborough can also pick up Belmont, which carries BBC Yorkshire & Lincolnshire and ITV Yorkshire news, so we check which region you want before aligning. We measure first and only recommend a new aerial when the readings show it's needed.

Which transmitter serves Peterborough?

Most of Peterborough uses Sandy Heath in Bedfordshire, about 30 miles south, for BBC East and ITV Anglia. Some homes on the northern side can also pick up Belmont in Lincolnshire, which carries BBC Look North for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. We measure both.

Our block of flats has lost channels. Who fixes it?

We repair shared aerial systems for residents, landlords, housing associations and managing agents. A fault in the amplifier or splitters often takes out several flats at once.

Do you cover the villages around Peterborough?

Yes, including Yaxley, Eye, Thorney, Glinton, Castor, Ailsworth, Stanground and Farcet.
