Suffolk reception

TV transmitters serving Suffolk

Most of Suffolk is served by the Sudbury transmitter, with relays at Ipswich, Felixstowe and Woodbridge. North Suffolk, including Lowestoft and Beccles, looks to Tacolneston in Norfolk, while the west, around Newmarket and Haverhill, can also use Sandy Heath.

Our home county

Suffolk is where we do much of our work, with local engineers right across the county, from Haverhill and Newmarket in the west to Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Lowestoft in the east, and every village between. We install and repair TV aerials, fit Sky and Freesat dishes and design CCTV, alarms and access control and WiFi networks for homes and businesses across Suffolk.

TV reception in Suffolk

Most of Suffolk receives Freeview from the Sudbury transmitter, which stands close to the Essex border and carries BBC East and ITV Anglia. Sudbury's signal reaches across central and southern Suffolk, but hills, valleys and tall buildings create pockets where a relay does better. That's why Suffolk has several local relays, at Ipswich Stoke, Felixstowe and Woodbridge. Relays usually broadcast with vertical polarisation, so an aerial pointed at one is mounted differently from one pointed at Sudbury.

In the north-east, around Lowestoft, Beccles and Bungay, the stronger signal usually comes from Tacolneston in Norfolk, with a relay serving Lowestoft itself. In the west, around Newmarket and Haverhill, Sandy Heath in Bedfordshire is often an alternative to Sudbury. Around Mildenhall and Brandon, on the edge of the Fens and the Brecks, homes sit between transmitters and the best choice changes from one village to the next.

Historic towns and listed buildings

Suffolk has some of the finest historic towns in England. Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury, Woodbridge, Beccles and Lavenham all have large conservation areas and many listed buildings, and much of the county's housing is timber-framed, thatched or built of flint. That affects where aerials and dishes can go. In a conservation area, a dish usually can't face and be visible from the road, and listed buildings normally need consent. We use loft aerials, discreet rear positions and careful cabling so equipment works well without spoiling the building.

The Suffolk coast

From Felixstowe and Aldeburgh to Southwold and Lowestoft, coastal homes face salt air and strong onshore winds. Aerials and dishes here fail far more often from corrosion and wind damage than inland. We fit stainless and heavy-duty fixings, weather-sealed connectors and rigid brackets so installations last.

Growing towns and new estates

Haverhill, Kesgrave, Stowmarket and the outskirts of Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds have grown quickly. New-build homes often come with a single TV point and a basic router, so we're regularly asked to add TV points, run network cabling, extend WiFi and fit CCTV and video doorbells. Many newer blocks of flats have communal aerial or IRS systems, which we repair and extend for residents and managing agents.

Rural Suffolk

Large parts of Suffolk are farmland and small villages, where homes can be some distance from any mast. High-gain aerials, taller masts and low-loss cable make a real difference. Farms and rural businesses also ask us for CCTV covering yards, gates and outbuildings, often linked by wireless where trenching cable isn't practical.
