Where your dish points in Cambridge

From Cambridge, the Astra satellites at 28.2° east sit to the south-east. These are the angles we set with a meter on every dish here.

A few degrees out and the picture drops in heavy rain. We align every dish with a meter, then lock it off.

In Cambridge that means facing 146° SE, tilted 24.8° up, with the LNB turned about 20°. Trees, chimneys and neighbouring extensions in that direction are the usual reasons a dish can't see the satellite, so we check the line of sight before we fit anything.

Satellite engineers in Cambridge

We install, move and repair satellite dishes in Cambridge for Sky and Freesat customers, landlords and managing agents. Our work in the city ranges from discreet installations on period homes in Newnham and De Freville to dishes on terraces around Mill Road, family homes in Cherry Hinton and Trumpington, and shared satellite systems in apartment blocks across the city.

From Cambridge, the satellites at 28.2° east sit roughly to the south-east, fairly low in the sky. A standard small dish is plenty, but it needs a clear line of sight. In a city of tall buildings and mature trees, finding that line is often the main job, so we check it carefully before fixing anything.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Cambridge is one of the most protected cities in the country. Large parts of the centre and many surrounding streets are conservation areas, and there are a great many listed buildings. In a conservation area, a dish usually can't be fixed to a chimney, wall or roof slope that faces onto and is visible from a road. On a listed building, consent is normally needed for any dish.

Most homes can still have satellite TV with the right position. A rear wall, a back garden, a flat roof below the parapet or a low ground mount often gives a clear view to the south-east while staying out of sight from the street. We'll walk you through the options and flag anything that might need consent before we fit.

Trees, terraces and tall buildings

Cambridge's green spaces and tree-lined streets look wonderful but can block satellite signals. A dish that works in winter may lose signal in summer once the leaves are out. Tall college buildings, new apartment blocks and neighbouring chimneys can also get in the way, especially in tightly packed terraces. We check the view at your property, and if it's blocked, find another spot rather than fitting a dish that won't work all year.

Rented homes and shared houses

With so many homes let to students, researchers and professionals, we often fit dishes and multi-room feeds for landlords and tenants. We use robust fixings and tidy cabling suited to a rented home and can set up Sky or Freesat boxes in the living room and other rooms.

Flats and shared satellite systems

Many blocks in Cambridge, particularly newer developments, have a shared dish feeding every flat through an integrated reception system. If your satellite socket isn't working, we'll test your flat's cabling and the shared system and repair whichever has failed. We also extend and upgrade shared systems for managing agents.

Satellite problems we fix in Cambridge

  • Told the dish can't go on the front

    Likely cause
Conservation-area or listed-building rules about dishes facing the road.
    How we fix it
We find a compliant position at the side, rear or below the roofline.
  • Flat's satellite socket is dead

    Likely cause
A failed multiswitch or riser cable in the block's shared system.
    How we fix it
We test the flat and the shared equipment and fix whichever has failed.
  • Picture drops out in heavy rain

    Likely cause
A dish a fraction of a degree out of line, or an ageing LNB with no signal margin left.
    How we fix it
Realign with a satellite meter and replace the LNB if it's failing.
  • 'No satellite signal' after a storm

    Likely cause
Wind or scaffolders have moved the dish, or a loose bracket has let it droop.
    How we fix it
Re-secure on a rigid bracket and realign to the right bearing and elevation.
  • Some channels missing

    Likely cause
A weak or noisy signal where only the strongest channels get through, often a corroded connector.
    How we fix it
New weather-sealed connectors and cable, and a meter-checked alignment.
  • Want satellite in an annexe or barn

    Likely cause
The main dish is too far away or has no spare output.
    How we fix it
Run cable from the dish or fit a second small dish.

Can I put a satellite dish on my house in Cambridge?

Usually, yes, but large parts of Cambridge are conservation areas and many buildings are listed. Dishes there usually can't face and be visible from the road, and listed buildings normally need consent. We find compliant positions at the rear or below the roofline.

Can I have a dish on a rented property?

You'll need the landlord's permission, and some leases restrict dishes. We work with landlords and letting agents and can fit dishes and multi-room feeds in rented homes.

My flat has a satellite socket but no picture. Can you help?

Yes. Many blocks have a shared satellite system feeding every flat. If your socket isn't working, the fault may be in your flat's cabling or in the shared system, and we can trace and repair either.
