Aerial engineers for Braintree

Braintree has grown from a historic wool and silk town into one of the busiest market towns in mid-Essex. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Braintree across the whole district: the town centre and its Victorian terraces, the historic streets of Bocking and Bradford Street, the large estates of Great Notley and Black Notley, family homes in Rayne, High Garrett and Panfield Lane, and the villages around.

Every visit starts with a signal meter at the aerial and at each TV point. That shows us exactly where the signal is being lost, so we fix the actual fault, whether that's the aerial, the cable, an amplifier or a setting on the TV.

Freeview from Sudbury

Braintree receives Freeview from the Sudbury transmitter to the north-east, which carries BBC East and ITV Anglia. The town is well within range and most homes get a good signal. Reception does vary, though. Homes in the valleys of the River Brain and the Blackwater, properties shaded by mature trees and houses on the edges of the newer estates can see a weaker signal than their neighbours. Older aerials that have been up for decades, with corroded connectors and cable that has let water in, are the most common cause of trouble.

Some aerials in Braintree also predate the frequency changes of recent years and struggle with certain channels. We'll tell you honestly whether a realignment, new cable or a new wideband aerial is the right fix.

Great Notley and new-build homes

Great Notley and the newer developments around Braintree are home to many young families, and new-build houses often come with just one or two TV points. We add points to bedrooms, playrooms, studies and garden rooms, fit a distribution amplifier so every TV gets a strong, even signal, and set up Freeview Play on new smart TVs. We can wall-mount TVs and add network cabling in the same visit.

Bocking and older homes

Bocking and parts of central Braintree are conservation areas with timber-framed and period houses, some of them listed. Older chimneys can be too fragile for a heavy bracket. In these homes we often fit a lighter bracket, a wall mount on a rear elevation or a loft aerial where the signal allows.

Villages around Braintree

In the villages around Braintree, including Rayne, Coggeshall, Silver End, Gosfield and Shalford, homes can be further from the transmitter or tucked into valleys. High-gain aerials on taller poles and good low-loss cable usually give a stable picture. Rural homes and farms also often need longer cable runs to outbuildings and annexes.

4G and 5G interference

Busy roads like the A120 and the town's growth have brought plenty of mobile masts, and unfiltered aerials and amplifiers can be swamped by mobile signals close to Freeview frequencies. If channels drop out at busy times of day, a filtered aerial or an amplifier filter usually fixes it.

Common aerial jobs in Braintree

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • No Freeview signal on any TV

    Likely cause
A failed masthead amplifier or power supply, or a cable damaged in the loft.
    How we fix it
We trace the fault with a meter and replace the failed part.

Why have I lost Freeview channels in Braintree?

Usually because the aerial is no longer picking up every Freeview multiplex from the Sudbury mast on the Suffolk–Essex border. Frequencies have been reorganised over the years, so an older aerial, a waterlogged cable or a failing amplifier can lose some channels while others look fine. We test the signal at the aerial and at every socket in your Braintree home, then tell you whether a retune, new cable, a realign or a new Freeview aerial will fix it.

Which transmitter serves Braintree?

Braintree is served by the Sudbury transmitter, about 15 miles to the north-east, carrying BBC East and ITV Anglia. Signal is usually good, but valleys and trees can create weak spots, so we test at your property.

My new-build in Great Notley only has one TV point. Can you add more?

Yes. We add TV and network points to bedrooms, studies and garden rooms, with a distribution amplifier so every TV gets a strong signal.

Can you fit aerials on older houses in Bocking?

Yes. On period homes and in conservation areas we use lighter brackets or loft aerials and keep equipment discreet.
