Where your dish points in March

From March, the Astra satellites at 28.2° east sit to the south-east. These are the angles we set with a meter on every dish here.

Direction
–
Tilt up
–
LNB twist
–

A few degrees out and the picture drops in heavy rain. We align every dish with a meter, then lock it off.

In March that means facing 146° SE, tilted 24.5° up, with the LNB turned about 20°. Trees, chimneys and neighbouring extensions in that direction are the usual reasons a dish can't see the satellite, so we check the line of sight before we fit anything.

Satellite engineers in March

We install, move and repair satellite dishes in March for Sky and Freesat customers in the town and on the farms and villages around it.

Clear skies, strong wind

From March the satellites sit to the south-east, and across the flat fen there's rarely anything in the way. The problem is wind. Light brackets flex and dishes creep out of line until the picture freezes in heavy rain. We fit rigid brackets with stainless fixings and recheck the alignment with a meter before we leave.

Freesat for weak Freeview

Where Freeview from Sandy Heath is patchy, Freesat is often the simplest fix: a small dish, the main channels in HD and no monthly bill.

Bungalows and farms

On bungalows we mount higher to clear fences and sheds. On farms we feed the farmhouse and annexes from one dish or fit a second where cable runs would be too long.

Satellite problems we fix in March

  • Want satellite in an annexe or barn

    Likely cause
The main dish is too far away or has no spare output.
    How we fix it
Run cable from the dish or fit a second small dish.
  • 'No satellite signal' after a storm

    Likely cause
Wind or scaffolders have moved the dish, or a loose bracket has let it droop.
    How we fix it
Re-secure on a rigid bracket and realign to the right bearing and elevation.
  • Told the dish can't go on the front

    Likely cause
Conservation-area or listed-building rules about dishes facing the road.
    How we fix it
We find a compliant position at the side, rear or below the roofline.
  • Dish in the way of solar panels or an extension

    Likely cause
Building work where the dish is fixed.
    How we fix it
Take it down, refit it in a clear spot and realign with a meter.
  • Flat's satellite socket is dead

    Likely cause
A failed multiswitch or riser cable in the block's shared system.
    How we fix it
We test the flat and the shared equipment and fix whichever has failed.
  • Worked in winter, fails in summer

    Likely cause
Trees coming into leaf between the dish and the satellite.
    How we fix it
Move the dish to a position with a clear view all year.

Is Freesat worth it in March?

For many homes, yes. Freesat gives HD channels with no subscription and doesn't rely on the distant TV mast.

Can you put a dish on a bungalow?

Yes. We usually fit it higher, on the gable or chimney, so fences and sheds don't block the view.

Do you cover the villages around March?

Yes, including Wimblington, Doddington, Benwick and Guyhirn.
