Aerial engineers for Epping

Epping is a market town on a ridge at the northern end of Epping Forest, with a long High Street, a weekly market and the end of the Central line. Around it are Victorian and inter-war homes, larger detached houses, newer developments and villages such as Coopersale, Theydon Bois and North Weald. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Epping across the town and the villages.

Crystal Palace or Sudbury?

Epping is in the London TV region, and most homes receive Freeview from Crystal Palace, carrying BBC London and ITV London. Being further north than most of the London region, some homes can also pick up the Sudbury transmitter, which carries BBC East and ITV Anglia. Epping's ridge helps reception, but the forest and the mature trees in many gardens can block the signal, often more so in summer.

We measure both transmitters at your roof and set up the aerial for the most reliable picture.

Your Freeview channels in Epping

Crystal Palace is a main transmitter, so homes in Epping should see every Freeview channel, HD included. Gaps in the channel list usually point to the aerial, the cable or an amplifier rather than the transmitter, and a signal meter shows which.

Before we leave, every TV and recorder is retuned to Freeview and checked channel by channel, HD included. For Freeview Play, the TV also needs a broadband connection, and we set that up if it is missing. Weighing up Freeview against Freesat or Sky? See our guide to Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Freely.

The High Street and older homes

Much of central Epping is a conservation area with listed buildings. On older chimneys we use lighter brackets, discreet positions or loft aerials, and we route cable neatly.

Larger homes and villages

Many homes around Epping need TV in several rooms, annexes and garden offices. We design multi-room systems with the right amplifier, and in the villages fit taller masts where low ground or trees weaken the signal.

Common aerial problems in Epping

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • Regional news from the wrong area

    Likely cause
The aerial is pointed at Sudbury rather than Crystal Palace, or the other way round.
    How we fix it
We test both and realign to the region you want, if the signal allows.

Do I need a new aerial for Freeview in Epping?

Not always. Freeview in Epping comes from the Crystal Palace mast in south London, broadcast with horizontal polarisation. If your aerial points the right way, is in good condition and covers the frequencies in use today, a retune or new cable may be all it needs. Some homes in Epping can also pick up Sudbury, which carries BBC East and ITV Anglia news, so we check which region you want before aligning. We measure first and only recommend a new aerial when the readings show it's needed.

Should my Epping aerial point at Crystal Palace or Sudbury?

Most homes use Crystal Palace, for BBC London and ITV London. Some, especially north and east of the town, can also receive Sudbury, for BBC East and ITV Anglia. We measure both.

My picture gets worse in summer. Why?

Trees in full leaf between your aerial and the transmitter can weaken the signal. Raising or moving the aerial usually fixes it.

Do you cover nearby villages?

Yes, including Coopersale, Theydon Bois, North Weald, Thornwood, Fyfield and Epping Green.
