Aerial engineers for Clacton-on-Sea

Clacton is a classic seaside town, and its housing is very different from most of Essex. We install, repair and realign TV aerials in Clacton-on-Sea on everything from Victorian and Edwardian houses near the pier and the town centre, to the streets of bungalows that cover much of Holland-on-Sea and Great Clacton, family homes at Rush Green and Bockings Elm, holiday chalets at Jaywick and the parks around St Osyth.

We always start with a signal meter. Testing at the aerial and at each TV point shows whether the problem is the aerial, the cable, the connectors or interference, so you only pay for the repair you need.

Your Freeview channels in Clacton-on-Sea

Which signal your aerial uses decides how many Freeview channels you get in Clacton-on-Sea. Sudbury is a main transmitter and carries the full line-up, HD included. The Clacton relay carries a cut-down version: the main BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels, but far fewer of the rest. If your channel list looks short, the aerial may be on the relay, and we can tell you whether Sudbury is strong enough at your address to get the rest.

Whatever the job, we finish by retuning every TV and recorder in the house and checking that each Freeview channel, including HD, comes in cleanly. Freeview Play catch-up also needs the TV online, so we check that while we are there. Weighing up Freeview against Freesat or Sky? See our guide to Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Freely.

Sudbury and the Clacton relay

Clacton receives Freeview from two sources, both carrying BBC East and ITV Anglia. The main Sudbury transmitter lies about 30 miles inland, and its signal reaches much of the town. Because of that distance and the lie of the land, the local Clacton relay gives some streets a cleaner, steadier signal.

The relay uses vertical polarisation, so an aerial pointed at it is mounted on its side. Look along any street in Clacton and you'll see both types. We measure Sudbury and the relay at your property and choose the one that gives the most reliable picture.

Bungalows and low rooflines

A large share of Clacton's homes are bungalows, particularly in Holland-on-Sea and Great Clacton. A bungalow's aerial sits much lower than a house's, so it can be shadowed by neighbouring roofs, trees and hedges. A taller pole, a higher-gain aerial and careful positioning usually solve it. Because bungalows are popular with older residents, we also take time to set up TVs, retune them and make sure the remote and any set-top box are easy to use.

Seafront weather

Clacton's seafront faces the open North Sea, and the wind and salt are tough on aerials. Corroded clamps and brackets, connectors full of water and poles bent by winter storms are common. We fit aerials with stainless and heavy-duty fixings, double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors, and check that the installation is secure before we leave.

Holiday homes, chalets and parks

Jaywick, St Osyth and the parks around Clacton have many chalets, caravans and holiday homes. We fit compact aerials and repair shared aerial systems that feed many units, and can set up TVs ready for the season.

Flats and converted houses

Many of Clacton's larger houses near the seafront and town centre have been converted into flats with a shared aerial. When several flats lose channels together, we trace and repair the fault in the communal system.

Common aerial jobs in Clacton

  • Picture breaks up when it's windy

    Likely cause
A loose aerial, a corroded clamp or a chimney bracket that has worked free.
    How we fix it
We re-secure or replace the fixings and realign the aerial with a meter.
  • Blocky picture after rain

    Likely cause
Water inside the cable or connector, which weakens the signal more each year.
    How we fix it
New double-screened cable and weather-sealed connectors.
  • Freeview channels missing after a retune

    Likely cause
An older aerial that doesn't cover every frequency now in use, or one pointed at a weaker transmitter.
    How we fix it
Retune correctly, realign, or fit a wideband aerial.
  • Drops out at busy times of day

    Likely cause
4G or 5G signals from a nearby phone mast swamping an unfiltered aerial or amplifier.
    How we fix it
A filtered aerial or a filter at the amplifier.
  • Aerial rusted or bent

    Likely cause
Salt air and coastal gales attacking cheap steel fittings.
    How we fix it
Stainless and heavy-duty fixings on a stronger pole.

Speak to an engineer

Call 0800 151 2978
Can you set up Freeview Play and HD channels in Clacton-on-Sea?

Yes. Once the aerial gives a strong, stable signal from Clacton or Sudbury, we tune every TV and recorder, check the HD channels and BBC East and ITV Anglia regional news come through cleanly, and connect Freeview Play to your broadband for catch-up and on-demand.

Should my Clacton aerial point at Sudbury or the Clacton relay?

Both carry BBC East and ITV Anglia. Many homes receive Sudbury, about 30 miles inland, while others get a cleaner signal from the local Clacton relay, which needs a vertically mounted aerial. We measure both before choosing.

Can you fit an aerial on my bungalow?

Yes. Bungalows sit lower, so the aerial often needs a taller pole to clear neighbouring roofs and trees. We fit it securely and align it with a meter.

Why does my picture break up when it's windy?

Usually the aerial is loose, the bracket has corroded or water has got into the cable. We re-secure or replace the fittings and seal the connections.
